Sir Walter Scott was born on 15 August 1771 and died on 21 September 1832. Most people know him as a poet and historical novelist. Not so many people realise that he was the Sheriff of Selkirkshire from 1799 to 1832 and that he became Clerk to the Court of Session in Edinburgh in 1806.
The courtroom he used in Selkirk is now a
museum, and there are a number of websites that give interesting details of his
life in the Borders.
The
current Sheriff Court, where the District procurator Fiscal is also based, is in an interesting building not far from the square where the monument to Scott, and his Courthouse, stand.
