Advocate Deputes appointed

ADVOCATE DEPUTES APPOINTED

The pool of legal talent available for prosecuting cases in the High Court has widened as the Lord Advocate, Colin Boyd QC, announced the latest Advocate Depute appointments.

Angus Stewart QC and Angela Grahame have both been appointed as Senior Advocate Deputes. Mr Stewart was a senior member of the Bar and Keper of the Advocates' Library until 2002, and is currently serving on the panel of ad hoc Advocate Deputes. Angela Grahame has been serving as an Advocate Depute since 2003.

Alastair Kennedy, a Solicitor Advocate since 2003, has been appointed as an Advocate Depute. Mr Kennedy has spent much of his career with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

Mr Boyd said:

"I am delighted to be announcing these appointments, which further strengthen the already considerable talent that is evident in Crown Counsel. These lawyers will contribute to the prosecution of the most serious crime in Scotland.

"I am pleased that the Crown continues to attract high quality candidates, from diverse legal backgrounds. These appointments include members of the Faculty of Advocates and staff in the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service."

2. Advocate Deputes are referred to collectively as Crown Counsel.

3. Angust Stewart QC will take up his appointment on 26 September 2005. Angus is a member of the Faculty of Advocates. He was educated at the University of Oxford and University of Edinburgh. He was called to the bar in 1975 and took Silk in 1988.

4. Angela Grahame took up her new position on 1 July 2005. She is a member of the Faculty of Advocates. Angela was educated at the University of Aberdeen. She was called to the bar in 1995.

5. Alastair Kennedy took up his position on 3 May 2005. His most recent appointment within the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service was as a Principal Procurator Fiscal Depute in the Financial Crime Unit.

6. These appointments take the number of permanent Advocate Deputes to 23.
