Protocol - Review of the Family Liaison Protocol Report and Recommendations - COPFS/ACPOS [Publication]

Family Liaison is the process through which the Police and Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) work together to provide victims and bereaved nearest relatives with information and support during certain major investigations which may lead to criminal or other proceedings. The Family Liaison Protocol specifically determines good practice in relation to family liaison following a death which leads to criminal proceedings.

For many witnesses, contact with the criminal justice system is not a matter of choice, comes at a time of great stress in their lives, and is a process that is alien to them. Giving a statement, and perhaps eventually giving evidence at court, can be difficult and stressful. Individual witnesses have different needs. It is the responsibility of those in the criminal justice system to recognise and seek to meet those needs, and to assist the witness to give their best evidence.
