On this page:

When will Victim Information and Advice Service get in touch with you?

At first

VIA offers a service to victims, witnesses and bereaved nearest relatives from the time a decision is made to begin criminal proceedings until the case finishes.

There should be no need for you to ask for help from VIA - you should be contacted by us, and then be able to contact your named VIA Officer at any time.

During the Case:

VIA will normally provide information following any key court hearings and when there is any other significant progress in a case. This includes :

  • dates of court hearings
  • decisions made about bail
  • trial verdicts
  • sentencing
  • the outcome of any appeal

What if I'm not contacted?

If you have not been contacted by VIA this is probably because the service is not offered in your particular case. The range of cases covered is listed on another page.

If you are in doubt, the Procurator Fiscal involved with your case should be able to advise whether you should be receiving information and advice from VIA.
