At Edinburgh Sheriff Court today, a Confiscation Order for £4,444.80 was made against Bernard Flanagan (DOB 17.04.86). Flanagan, from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, had previously been found guilty of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs, namely cocaine, between May 2007 and October 2008. He was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court today, a Confiscation Order for £48,837.94 was made against Ejaz Chaudhry (DOB 20/06/1976). Chaudhry, from Glasgow, had previously pled guilty to producing and being concerned in the supply of cannabis, and possessing CS spray. He was sentenced to 300 hours community service.

A dedicated domestic abuse court is to be piloted at Livingston Sheriff Court from Thursday (16 Feb). The new multi-agency pilot will improve the service domestic abuse victims in West Lothian receive from the criminal justice system.

At Dunfermline Sheriff Court today, a Confiscation Order for £10,000 was made against Gregory Hughes (DOB 12/03/1971). Hughes, from Dunfermline, had previously pled guilty to cultivating cannabis at his home in Rosyth. He was sentenced to 180 hours community service.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court today, Railcare Ltd were fined £133,000 (reduced from £200,000 on account of their guilty plea) for a breach of Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, following the death of one of their employees on 15 December 2008 at the company’s premises on Charles Street, Springburn. John Smith, a 53-year old employee of the company who had worked at the premises there for some 30 years, died as a result of head injuries sustained whilst working at an axle lathe that had an unguarded chuck.

At Banff Sheriff Court today, a Confiscation Order for £11,800 was made against Kate Smeaton (DOB 21-09-1971). Smeaton, from Winchester, had previously pled guilty to wrongly claiming income support benefit totalling £12,000. She had pretended to be living alone as an unemployed single parent when she was in fact living with her husband, who was employed full-time. She was sentenced to 240 hours community service

At the High Court in Glasgow today, Craig Jamieson (DOB 28-04-1979) was convicted for the second time of the murder of his four-month-old daughter Abbie, at a flat in Dumbarton Road, Glasgow in 2008.
At Edinburgh Sheriff Court, a Confiscation Order for £200,000 was made against John Lamberton. Lamberton, from Edinburgh, was found guilty in 2005 of embezzling £410,000 from his late aunt's stock and shares. He was also found guilty of non-payment of tax and non-payment of a half-share of his aunt's estate to his brother. He was sentenced to five years' imprisonment (reduced from seven after appeal against sentence). Lamberton was extradited from Spain where he had fled following being indicted, and was convicted after a four-week trial.

At the High Court in Glasgow today, Craig Roy was found guilty of the murder of Jack Frew. The jury found him guilty unanimously following a 12-day trial.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court today, David Craig (DOB 26/09/1987) pled guilty to posting sectarian messages on a social networking site. The court heard that between 2 March and 14 March 2011 Craig, from Paisley, posted a number of messages on Facebook of an offensive, threatening, abusive and sectarian nature. He had also uploaded an image of Celtic manager Neil Lennon which had been altered to simulate him having been shot a number of times.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court today, a Confiscation Order for £75,000 was made against Edward Lyons (DOB 14-02-1958). Lyons, from Glasgow, had previously pleaded guilty to two mortgage frauds and transferring criminal property. He was sentenced to 300 hours community service.

The pilot, which will initially run at Edinburgh Sheriff Court for a 4 month period, will test the potential benefits of using mobile phone text (SMS) messages, in order to remind Crown witnesses of the date they are due to attend court.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court today, Lanarkshire Health Board was fined £24,000 for a breach of Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, which led to the serious illness of a hospital patient. Over the course of November 2008, the 64-year old female patient at Hartwoodhill Hospital became gravely unwell.

At Lanark Sheriff Court today, Andrew Mullen pled guilty to keeping five dogs for the purposes of animal fighting, contrary to the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006, section 23(1)(a). Mullen, from Uddingston, Lanarkshire, was also found to have 340 photographs on a laptop showing dogs fighting with foxes, badgers and other dogs.
The murder of Surjit Singh Chhokar in 1998 is being reviewed by the Crown Office. Strathclyde Police have now been instructed to carry out further investigation into his murder under the Double Jeopardy legislation introduced in November last year. The family of Mr. Chhokar were informed today of the Crown’s decision by the Lord Advocate, Frank Mulholland QC and the Solicitor General for Scotland, Lesley Thomson QC, at a meeting in the Crown Office, Edinburgh.
